Energy Storage
What is Energy Storage?
Energy storage captures energy produced at one time for later use, balancing supply and demand, and providing a fallback for the electricity grid. It stores excess energy during low demand or high production and releases it to the power grid during peak demand, playing a crucial role in energy storage operations.
Essential for maintaining a reliable and stable electricity grid, battery energy storage systems (BESS) seamlessly integrate with various infrastructures, accommodating a diverse energy mix to ensure sustainable power delivery. These systems complement natural gas assets and aid in the integration of new low-carbon technologies by managing surplus energy and maintaining a consistent power supply. This synergy between baseload generation and energy storage creates a resilient system adaptable to an evolving energy landscape. Additionally, energy storage enhances grid reliability through frequency regulation and rapid response to supply and demand fluctuations, ensuring stability.
There are various types of energy storage technologies operating today, including pumped hydro, compressed air, flywheels, and batteries. Battery energy storage makes up Enfinite’s current operating portfolio, contributing significantly to our commitment to energy sustainability.
Enfinite’s Energy Storage Operations
Enfinite currently operates nine energy storage projects within our eReserve program, located throughout Alberta. These battery energy storage facilities (BESF) have an aggregated capacity of 180 MW and the ability to store up to 315 MWh of energy. Additional transformative energy storage projects are under development, further advancing our role in the future of sustainable energy.
‘Since 2020, Tesla has supplied Enfinite with Megapack, Tesla’s utility-scale battery energy storage system for their nine Battery Energy Storage Facilities (BESF) across Alberta, Canada. Tesla has collaborated closely with Enfinite from site design through deployment and ongoing service and operations. Together these projects utilize Megapack to enhance grid stability and prevent outages. 180 MW / 315 MWh of Megapacks have delivered historic levels of output in Alberta during periods of high energy demand due to extreme cold conditions, providing a crucial line of defense against rolling blackouts. Together, Tesla and Enfinite continue to navigate challenges and achieve milestones seamlessly and successfully, strengthening grid resilience and supporting greater renewables integration.’
